The CVE description emphasizes the 'enable_psuccess_approval' setting as a conditional requirement, but that's misleading — the most dangerous attack vectors work unconditionally on every single installation. An attacker can mark arbitrary reservations as paid, cancel legitimate payments, and trigger transactional emails without needing that toggle enabled at all. The vulnerability exposes a database write primitive via what appears to be a missing capability check on an AJAX endpoint, not a simple authorization bypass that only affects a subset of configurations. This is a write primitive, not a read primitive. That's a critical distinction often lost in severity scoring. Attackers aren't just accessing records they shouldn't see — they're writing attacker-supplied payment status and transaction data directly into the payments table. That corrupts data integrity and creates downstream risk for any system consuming this payment data: billing integrations, accounting systems, reporting dashboards. An attacker can falsify payment records for fraud, and the falsified data will propagate through automated workflows that trust the database. The email dispatch vector deserves more attention than it typically gets. Transactional emails from a booking system contain confirmed reservation details, dates, confirmation numbers, and other data that makes social engineering highly credible. An attacker triggering these emails can conduct sophisticated phishing campaigns using legitimate-appearing communications, or weaponize the noise to erode user trust in the system's notifications. This vector has a longer detection tail than payment fraud — reconciliation catches payment anomalies quickly, but stealth email dispatch can operate below detection thresholds for weeks. From a patch perspective, verify whether the fix adds a capability check or implements input validation at the database layer. These are meaningfully different remediation approaches with different residual risk profiles. A pure capability check leaves the underlying data write path unauthenticated from an input validation standpoint — any future bypass of that check would have no sanitization defense. Input validation at the write layer is a more durable fix. Audit every AJAX handler in this plugin for consistent authorization. If one endpoint was missing a capability check, the probability that others are too is high. The CVE scope likely reflects the minimum reproducible exploit, not the full scope of the authorization gap. This is a systematic pattern in WordPress plugins — the admin UI gets secured while programmatic interfaces are left open because they aren't surfaced in the admin experience. Attackers specifically target this gap, and recon tooling already treats AJAX endpoints as standard enumeration targets.
